Why equitherapy works

Movement and gravity build the brain’s foundations for learning.

Equitherapy uses the horse’s three-dimensional movement to stimulate the vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile systems — the sensory building blocks behind gross motor, fine motor and perceptual-motor skills. Research from sensory-integration pioneers such as Jean Ayres has shown that many learning difficulties trace back to how well a child’s brain registers and organises sensory information.

For children who struggle to sit still, focus, coordinate movement, or process sensory input, time on horseback in a structured therapeutic setting can build the physical and neurological groundwork that classroom learning depends on. Spending calm, guided time with a horse also has a well-documented settling effect — children tend to leave sessions less anxious and more regulated, which makes it easier for the rest of their day to go well.
